It is no longer a secret to anyone that pollution has perverse and very disturbing effects on the health of those inhabitants who must live with it on a daily basis. That is why it is important that researchers continue to analyze and demonstrate that this impact reduces the quality of life of people who live in contaminated areas, since their conclusions will increase the pressure and awareness of the rulers to implement policies to improve the air quality.

Today I will talk about a study that relates pollution to glaucoma. Researchers at University College London have conducted a study showing that residents of neighborhoods with a higher concentration of fine particle pollution have a higher risk of developing glaucoma.

6% more likely to develop glaucoma

In the study, published in the IOVS (Investigative Ophthalmology and Vision Science; link at the end of the post), scientists found that those who live in areas with higher levels of air pollution had a 6% greater chance of develop glaucoma than those who live in neighborhoods with low levels of pollution.

The study was based on trials and tests conducted between 2006 and 2010 on the 11,370 participants within the UK Biobank study cohort.

These participants were asked if they had glaucoma, had their intraocular pressure measured, and had their macular thickness measured using optical coherence tomography.

The data from the UK Biobank was later linked with the air pollution measurements found in the areas where the study participants lived, in order to determine the impact of pollution on the appearance of glaucoma, which yielded the figure that I have mentioned previously. .

This study reinforces previous research that found rural dwellers were 50% less likely to develop glaucoma than those living in urban areas; suggesting that contamination may play a role in the development of the disease.
