That is what the title of the article says, however personally I am quite skeptical. Now, another thing is that yoga does help to relax our vision after a long day of work, with this point of view I do agree more.

Why am I skeptical about the idea that yoga improves vision?

What optician-optometrist that I am, I know that a good visual refraction, associated with the appropriate optical equipment (glasses, contact lenses or refractive surgery) that the patient decides to choose as a solution to compensate for their ametropia, yes allows to improve vision plus correct vision problem with the most suitable visual equipment.

However, regarding these “alternative” visual correction methods I do not know the clinical studies and the results that have been obtained during them, data that apparently allow those who recommend them to say that they improve vision.

Now you know my opinion but I leave each one of you to draw your own conclusions, it would be missing more. I invite all those who have already had experiences with this type of treatment or technique to share with us their opinions and the results obtained via the comments.

Yoga for the eyes would improve vision

The principle of yoga for the eyes is the elevation of the ocular vital tone through the relaxation of sight in order to be able to regain lost vision. The myopia, the astigmatism, the farsightedness, the presbyopia or the squint can be treated with this technique.

It is very easy to put into practice and can be applied from the age of six. “It is a very simple method to follow and its fundamentals make it accessible to everyone,” said Nubia Isabel Bejarano Varela, optometrist.

The practice of yoga goes far beyond performing different physical postures, as it helps to strengthen and stretch the body while calming the mind.

The yoga for the eyes offers the same benefits to the eye muscles. The key is to perform each exercise slowly and carefully, simultaneously paying attention to both posture and breathing.

Recommended yoga poses for the eyes

vertical movements

Before you begin, sit in a comfortable and relaxed position. You are going to move your eyes in different directions. First, up and down:

  • Sit with your back straight, your hands on your knees, and your head facing forward.
  • Keeping your head still, roll your eyes and look up as far as you can.
  • Stay in this position for 3 seconds and then move your eyes and look down as far as possible. Repeat this exercise four times.
  • When you’re done, blink quickly a few times, close your eyes, and relax.

horizontal movements

Sit in a comfortable and relaxed posture. It can be helpful to focus on two different objects that you can see on both sides.

  • Move your eyes from far right to far left without forcing.
  • Repeat this exercise four times, pausing for a few seconds at each end.
  • When you’re done, blink quickly a few times, close your eyes, and relax.

Circular movements

The exercise of circular movements will also help you to give flexibility to the extraocular muscles, which are in charge of the movement of the eyes:

  • Draw a circle moving your eyes first in a clockwise direction, reaching as far as you can to the limit of vision, but being careful not to force so as not to exert too much stress.
  • When you have completed the circle in this direction, stop and do it again in the counterclockwise direction. Repeat the exercise twice in each direction.
  • When you’re done, blink quickly a few times, close your eyes, and relax.

relax your eyes

End the session with a relaxation technique using the palms of your hands.

  • Rub hands briskly until warm.
  • Then place your cupped hands over your closed eyes without touching them. The fingers of both hands should be placed overlapping so that they rest gently on the forehead.
  • Remain seated and relaxed for 1 or 2 minutes with your hands over your eyes and breathing deeply. The more you relax, the darker you will see with your eyes closed. This massage is ideal to finish the previous yoga exercises.
